Not long ago, I felt like the child Paul describes in Ephesians 4:14, “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes” (ESV). One day I’d be full of hope but the next day I’d encounter hardship and crumble. Life felt like an emotional rollercoaster I couldn’t get off. Hope turned to hopeless and joy turned to despair in the blink of an eye, all based on my circumstances.
My lack of roots caused these problems. The Bible tells us:
“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:7 (NLT)
Even though I grew up in a Christian home and attended church regularly, my faith remained shallow and immature. So when the storms of life blew in, I got swept away.
However, when we develop roots in God’s truth, we find stability. Our jobs, peers, circumstances, and past failures no longer define who we are or what we are worth. We can get off the emotional rollercoaster and rest secure in Christ.
Being deeply rooted in Christ also makes us “like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do” (Psalm 1:3, NLT). This isn’t a promise of unlimited success or that you won’t endure hardship, but it is a promise of blessings from our Heavenly Father.
