Advent, the 40 days leading up to Christmas, has been a favorite of mine since childhood. I love the wreath with the candles, the special devotional books, and most of all, the reminder to focus on Jesus.

But it wasn’t until my late twenties, sitting in chapel at a Christian University on Ash Wednesday, that I fell in love with Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter. For just as Advent prepares our hearts for Christmas, Lent prepares our hearts for Easter.

In her book Feast!, Haley Stewart describes Lent this way: “We fast, pray, and give, in order to clear our spiritual vision and to see ourselves as we truly are: in desperate need of God’s grace.” By setting aside the 40 days prior to Easter to draw close to God and fully understand our desperate need of the cross, Lent becomes a time of renewed joy in the Lord.

One simple way to prepare your heart for Easter

One of my favorite things to do during Lent is to participate in my friend Arabah Joy’s Praying the Promises of the Cross Challenge. Her FREE challenge captures the purpose of Lent perfectly by preparing your heart for Easter through praying scripture.

Bible, pen, and binder with Praying the Promises of the Cross quick reference guide.

During the challenge, you’ll pray just ONE promise a day for 40 days. I like to do it first thing in the morning because it focuses me on the cross before I start my day.

As a result, I marvel more at God’s love. Day after day, I profusely thank God for sacrificing Jesus to save me, for adopting me into his family, and for extending grace and righteousness to a sinner like me.

My time at the cross each morning fosters a heart of repentance. (How can I hold on to sin knowing what Jesus went through to redeem me?) And as the days pass, I offer forgiveness and grace to others more readily because God gives me an abundance of both every morning.

When I reflect back on my time praying the promises of the cross, my eyes open to the transformational power of the gospel. And the practice is so simple; go to the cross every day and meet Jesus there with an open heart.

If I can do this challenge, then you can too!
