This is part 2 of our look at righteousness. If you missed part 1, go back and read it here.

If you peeked into my closet, you would learn a lot about me by the clothes hanging there. You would find simple and classic pieces that reflect my practical nature. A neutral color palette with only a few pops of colors would tell you I have a reserved yet fun loving personality.  You may even notice the endless possibilities to mix and match dozens of outfits with just a few pieces, which reflects my creativity and need for variety.

What we wear reflects who we are. I think this is why the Bible repeatedly refers to righteousness as clothing (Job 29:14, Isaiah 61:10, Isaiah 59:17, Isaiah 11:5, Psalm 132:9, Revelation 19:8). Righteousness is intended to be a visible indicator of God’s children.

Which brings us to today’s question: what does it looks like to live out our righteousness in the world today?

Learn what the Bible has to say about being a righteous woman so that your words and deeds will be a reflection of Christ's righteousness within you.

When we look at what the Bible says about the ways of the righteous, we gain a pretty clear picture of what it looks like to be a righteous woman of God.

A Righteous Woman:

1. Turns from evil.

Righteousness and sin cannot coexist within us. Therefore, the righteous woman will not allow herself to be caught up in actions that disadvantage or harm others. She intentionally turns from evil and sets her sights on God.

He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil: He will dwell on high; His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; Bread will be given him, His water will be sure.” Isaiah 33:15-16 (NKJV)

2. Values Justice.

Righteousness and justice go hand in hand.

“Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!” Psalm 106:3(ESV)

The righteous woman not only avoids evil acts, but seeks to help the oppressed in our world. She speaks up for those without a voice, gives to those in need, and encourages others to do the same.

“The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.” Psalm 37:30 (ESV)

3. Does not fear or worry during difficult times.

Anxiety gives way to peace in the righteous woman’s heart. She knows God is with her always, and trust Him to help her through any situation.

“Such people will not be overcome by evil. Those who are righteous will be long remembered. They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly.” Psalm 112:6-8 (NLT)

4. Relies on God to Provide.

The righteous woman does not fret about what she will eat, drink, or wear. Instead, she dedicates her time to seeking God, knowing he will provide for her needs.

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33 (NLT)

5. Has Integrity.

What you see in public is what you would see in private with the righteous woman. Unlike the scribes and Pharisees in the Bible, she does not seek to put on a show for others, but aims to please the Lord day after day, whether anyone else notices or not.

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:20 (ESV)

6. Lives by the Spirit and not by the flesh.

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross does not weigh lightly on the righteous woman. She knows full well the cost of her righteousness.

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:3-4 (ESV)

Living by the Spirit, and not returning to her flesh, is how the righteous woman honors God for His amazing gift.

7. Spends time in God’s word

The righteous woman knows she needs continued training in the ways of righteousness; so she regularly turns to the Bible and asks God for wisdom and discernment to learn more.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)

8. Lives by Faith

Faith in god is of the upmost important to the righteous woman. Her faith saved her, and now it guides her and motivates her to live for God. She knows a life without faith is no life at all.

“This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” Romans 1:17 (NLT)

9. Obeys God’s commands

Righteousness cannot be obtained through works, but the righteous woman understands her faith is incomplete without obedience to God.

“Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” James 2:21-23 (NKJV)

Therefore, she seeks to be a doer of the word, and not just a hearer.

“For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.” Romans 2:13 (ESV)

10. Loves as God Loves

Since God loves all people, so does the righteous woman. Through her words and actions, she shares the love of Christ within her.

“Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.” 1 John 4:11-12 (NLT)

11. Is Generous

Giving is a way of life for the righteous woman. She is generous with her time and money, giving freely of both to those in need.

“The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives;” Psalm 37:21 (ESV)

12. Seeks peace

The righteous woman understands part of her role in God’s family means living in peace with others.

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.” Colossians 3:12-15 (ESV)

13. Sows Righteousness

Every righteous act performed is a seed sown by the righteous woman. She knows her good works do not go unnoticed, and that righteousness will continue to rain down on her as long as she continues to sow the seeds.

While we cannot earn righteousness by good works, our actions need to reflect the righteousness we received from Christ. For one day, Christ will return for his bride (the church), and He will know her by her righteousness.

“‘Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.’ And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints” Revelation 19:7-8
