At the beginning of last month, the empty pages of my planner called out, “fill me!” and “look, room for more!” Realistic expectations of achievable tasks were cast aside in the exciting potential of a blank slate. After mapping out the whole month, I anticipated greatness…until I got sick.
Within days, my great plan came to a halt. Sitting on my couch unable to move I asked, “God are you trying to tell me something?”
“Rest with me” Jesus replied.
Truthfully, filling every hour of every day left me exhausted, so I conceded.
Now, my version of resting usually means giving my mind and body a break; but after sitting on the couch watching Netflix for an hour, I felt God stirring within me, “this is not what I meant.”
God’s prescription for me echoed Jesus’ instructions for his disciples after a long day of work:
“Then because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he [Jesus] said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'” Mark 6:31
Notice, Jesus doesn’t say, “go rest,” but instead, “come with me…and get some rest.” Resting with Jesus refreshes our mind, body, and spirit (“I’ll refresh tired bodies; I’ll restore tired souls.” Jeremiah 31:25 MSG). Therefore, a call to rest, is really an invitation to be refreshed.
