My alarm goes off at 6:00am.
Through blurry eyes I reach over to my night stand and turn it off.
As I roll back onto my pillow I close my eyes and say a quick prayer:
Good morning Lord. I give this day to you. I am still very tired, so please help me wake up and give me energy to make it through the day. Amen
If I keep my eyes shut any longer I will be back asleep in no time.
But, if I open my eyes and start my morning, my sleepiness fades and I am filled with peace about the day ahead.
A habit so simple, yet so powerful.
The best way to start your day.
Let me explain why:
1. Energy from God is like nothing else we can find in this world. The effects are immediate, and it’s more than a quick energy boost.
When we ask God for energy, he supplies us with strength. Whether mental strength to get out of bed and face challenge situations, or the physical strength to keep going when your muscles are sore and tired.
In Colossians, Paul explains why we need to be strengthen by God:
“We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy.” Colossians 1:11(NLT)
Did you catch that? It is like a 4 for 1 special. You ask for energy and God gives you strength, endurance, patience and joy.
2. Starting your day with prayer puts God in control.
When I said “God I give this day to you,” what I mean is, “God this day belongs to you, my life belong to you, guide me where you want me to go, give me wisdom and a willing heart to follow your plan today.”
This doesn’t mean I don’t plan for my day, but I entrust it to God, relying on his strength to get everything done, and his guidance to let me know if I need to change my plans.
As a result, I am filled with peace.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him” Romans 15:13
I can’t think of a better way to start your day then by calling on God and receiving strength, endurance, patience, joy, peace, and more joy!
I challenge you to try it for yourself. Say a similar prayer first thing every morning. After a week, see if it has made a difference in how you approach your day and how you feel throughout the day.
Hi. Sweet and simple truth. I like your website too. I can see you’ve done a lot of prayerful and professional work on it. I pray you will be blessed. Soli Deo Gloria,
Thanks Christine. Sweet and simple truth is exactly what I aim for.
Im happy to see this blog. Thanks a lot kira.
I feel the same way! Your blog is great. So nice to meet you and be in CBB with you.
Thanks! I am loving the CBB community.
A friend recently told me she sits with her Bible even if she isn’t fully awake and starts – as she starts she wakes up. It has been helpful for me too – I even take my Bible to my kettle so I don’t get distracted while making that first cuppa. Realising I could talk with God while still sleepy has led to a good change in my habits.
Love it! I recently heard a clip from Beth Moore saying she won’t let herself have a sip of coffee until she has at least said good morning to God. She said she sleepily stumbles to the coffee pot and while it is brewing she goes to her knees.
What a great idea, Kira. Usually the first words out of my mouth is, “Thank you, God for a new day!” That gets my day started on the right foot. I think next I’ll ask Him for the energy to wake up and get me going. Thanks for sharing!
I just started getting into the Bible and reading daily. My first walk this morning at 6 was refreshing and my boby felt good today. Prayed and asked God for forgiveness and thanked Him, for his grace and mercy. I will be reading your prayer for a week.Thank you so much for the jump start.
I notice a huge difference in how I feel when I make time to be with God in the morning and when I don’t. I hope you are blessed by starting your days with God and would love to hear how it went!
