Every winter I forget about fog until I pull out of the garage, point my car down the street and look into a white sheet. Even though I can’t see the end of the block, I drive confidently forward, trusting the street still exists, and the path reveals itself as I move forward.

Following God’s call often feels like driving in the fog. God says go, so we pull out of our comfort zone, and point ourselves in the right direction, only to discover our view limited to 30 yards in front of us. To see more of the path, we must move forward in faith.

Honestly, looking into the unknown scares me. I like things planned out. I like itineraries telling me when and where everything takes place.

But as I drove in the fog this morning, depending upon a path I knew existed but could not see, I thought, “My confidence in God’s plan need to mirror the confidence I demonstrate driving in the fog. After all, God’s word assures us the road exists even if we cannot see it.”

Arriving home, I searched the Bible and confirmed my thoughts; we need not fear the fog God calls us into if we place our confidence fully in him.

7 Reasons to be Confident in God.

1.God provides everything we need for the journey.

Moving forward into the unknown scares planners like me because we don’t know what provisions to bring, “What if I am not prepared for what awaits me?” But God assures us, draw near and he provides, ask and he gives (according to his will).

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.” 1 John 5:14

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:15

2. God promises to protect you.

The unknown makes me nervous. Fog hides potholes in the road, and our enemy waiting down the street. But no matter what comes our way, God will protect us.

“For the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.” Proverbs 3:26

“In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge.” Proverbs 14:26

“But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” 2 Thessalonians 3:3

3. No difficulty you face is too great for God to overcome.

Sometimes the path doesn’t clear, and the fog gets so thick you can only see a few inches in front of your face; but we can still move forward in confidence. God never promises to make our journey easy, but he does promise to walk alongside you the whole way.

“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

4. God can always make a way.

Even when following God’s direction, we appear to hit dead ends. We look around, feeling stuck in our current situation. However, God’s perspective differs from ours, and he always see a way.

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:18-19

5. God works for our good.

We can confidently move into the unknown because God’s plan benefits us.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

6. God guides us along the way.

Even though we cannot see the end of the journey, God does not make us walk blindly through the fog. He guides us, lighting our path and showing the way when we step with faith.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:6

7. God rewards those who confidently follow his will.

Just in case you need  a little more motivation, a reward awaits those who remain steadfast and confident in God.

“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.” Hebrews 10:35-36

Unlike driving a familiar route in the fog, God wants to take us somewhere new. We won’t be able to see where we are going, or even the path to get there, but we can be assured of this:

The road exists, the destination is great, and placing full confidence in God will not fail us.
